Generic management of arrhythmias

Tachycardias

- any tachycardia: carotid sinus pressue (helps differentiate SVT vs. VT)
- narrow-complex: (IV) adenosine
- broad-complex: (IV) lignocaine
- if acute heart failure: DC cardioversion

Bradycardias

- atropine
- pacing

Other rhythm abnormalities

- escape beats: do nothing (in certain cases, these may be keeping the patient alive)
- extrasysoles: do nothing
- R-on-T phenomenon: ? risk of VF

Pacemakers

- single chamber vs dual chamber

- Nomenclature:

1st letter: chamber paced (V / A / D)
2nd letter: chamber sensed (V / A / 0)
3rd letter: pacemaker response (I / T / D)
4th letter: response to physical activity (± R)
